St. Barnabas is called to witness the Lord, Jesus Christ, to the people
in the northeast region of the Diocese of South Carolina. To be faithful
in worship and the stewardship of time, talent and treasure, and to serve
our community in quiet faithful service as did Barnabas whose name we bear.
Saint Barnabas
All we know about Barnabas is found in the New Testament. He was born in Cyprus to a Jewish family that had fled their homeland while under persecution. They later returned to Jerusalem. Barnabas became a Christian and sold all his property and gave the proceeds to the apostles who then gave him the name "Barnabas." He lived in common in the Christian community and persuaded them to accept Paul as a disciple. With Paul he traveled on missionary journeys and later with John Mark. Tradition has him preaching at places such as: Antioch, Cyprus, Alexandria, and Rome. Barnabas is thought to have been martyred by stoning at Salamis in 61 AD. |
